Oliver spins his way to National Success

Cheshire Youth cricketer Oliver Sutton has scooped a prestigious national award following a stellar season for club and county.

Oliver, a leg-spinner from Wallasey Cricket Club, won the Sir Jack Hobbs Silver Jubilee Memorial Prize for the most outstanding Under 16 schoolboy cricketer in England.

It follows a memorable 2025 in which Oliver took 82 wickets, including 41 for Wallasey’s senior and junior sides and 32 wickets for Cheshire Cricket Board U16s.

Oliver was the leading wicket taker in U16 ECB competition, with best bowling of 7-29 against Northumberland. The team reached the national semi-finals.

Earlier this month the 16-year-old from Mosslands School was invited to a star-studded event at the Union Jack Club in London to receive his award, which was presented by former England and Surrey legend Alec Stewart.

Previous winners of the Sir Jack Hobbs Silver Jubilee Memorial Prize include former Test captains Mike Gatting and Michael Atherton, and a host of other England players.

After collecting his trophy, Oliver said: “I am very proud to have won this prestigious award, but I am not looking too far ahead and plan on working really hard over the winter and next season for both my club and county and doing the best I can.”

Cheshire Youth Cricket Performance Manager Gavin Colebourn paid tribute to Oliver for his contribution to the county team in 2025. Gavin said: “Oliver has had an outstanding season with the ball and it’s lovely to see he has been recognised by The Cricket Society.

“We hope this is just the start of the journey for him and look forward to supporting his development through the winter in preparation for another strong year in 2026.”
