Flooding and waterlogging guidance
A message from the Grounds Management Association including guidance advice from ECB
All the snow and rain recently has caused flooding and waterlogging in many areas, so I thought it’d be useful to send over some guidance on prevention, damage limitation, and clear-up. Please feel free to share with your clubs, leagues, on social media etc. Different parts of the country will be impacted more severely than others, but there should be something for everyone in the links below.
The ECB advice on flooding covers both prevention and considerations for clean-up, with multisport advice from Sport England. The main page is here - https://www.ecb.co.uk/play/club-support/flooding.
Primarily aimed at winter sports surfaces rather than cricket specifically, it is still relevant to cricket outfields and contains useful information on identifying the causes of waterlogging - https://resources.thegma.org.uk/dealing-pitch-use-wet-and-waterlogged-conditions.
Cricket specific winter maintenance guidance can be found here - https://resources.thegma.org.uk/winter-maintenance. This covers advice on mowing, fertilisers, preparing the outfield for the season and most significantly aeration on the square. January is the final month where aeration is recommended for the square, so the window is beginning to close to get this done.
